Past Caratunk

Received a call today in hopes of mailing a Carroll County flag to our hikers. I was certainly glad that I waited to mail it when I heard how far they had hiked in the last couple of days. As I had said before, they had changed their final "slow-down" plan into a "speed-up" plan. On day 89 they had hiked 22.5 miles and on day 90 they had hiked 22.6 miles. They wound up at West Carry Pond Lean-to, elevation 1,340' last night. Today, day 9, they crossed the Kennebec River. They have passed through the town of Caratunk today and will be near Monson by tomorrow. Sometime tomorrow they will only be 117.8 miles from Mt. Katahdin.
Chris said this section of Maine is much easier and less intense than southern Maine. Well that's a relief!

  1. Larry and Kim Maxfield-Fearon met Jack and Chris in Maine at the AT Little Swift River pond camp site on Saturday Aug 15th. We were in for an overnight hike. We spent the evening talking around the campfire. (We even fed them a couple of hot dogs we had left over and we didn't have to ask them twice). The boys told us they were heading into Rangely the next morning. The following AM we wished them good luck and the boys hurried off toward Rt 4 and Rangley leaving us in their dust. We happened to be heading in the same direction as they were to pick up our Jeep. When we came out to the parking area another hiker (Rabbit) needed a ride into Rangely. We picked her up and dropped her off in Rangely. We saw the boys on the road heading back toward the trail. So we stopped and picked them up. I didn't know we could fit 4 people and 4 full size backpacks into a Jeep Wrangler (Minus the rear seat). The boys were in good shape when we dropped them back off at the AT. We wish them well and hope they have success on their journey, and hope they finally see a moose.
